ARE YOU PREPARED TO BURN THE BOATS?

375 Words | 1 Min 22 Sec Read

When you are in pursuit of something greater than yourself, a goal or achievement that requires your commitment and attention, you need to be prepared to burn the boats.

Burning the boats is the principle of eliminating plan B and fully committing to plan A. At first, this sounds stupid, the whole point of a plan B is in case plan A doesn’t work, right?

However, this method of utter commitment may be the trick that you’re missing; it may be the answer to why you struggle to fully commit and why you never scratch the surface of achieving your goals.

The only way is forward.

In the year 1519, when Hernán Cortés arrived in the ‘New World’ in what today is Mexico, his soldiers did not want to fight.

They were tired of the voyage, the natives were not friendly, and it was a strange land. Cortés, who wanted to conquer this new land, would have none of it.

To motivate his men, he burned his ships to the waterline, which left them with two stark choices: fight or die!

This sent a clear message to his men: there's no way back; the only way is forward.

The act of burning the boats becomes a symbol of determination, showing that sometimes eliminating the option to retreat is the key to achieving extraordinary goals.

Having a Plan B can unknowingly sabotage your true calling.

It becomes a safety cushion that often tempts you to settle for mediocrity instead of pushing forward towards your true potential.

The safety of an alternative plan prevents the full commitment of your goals.

So consider it; consider metaphorically burning your own boats to give yourself no choice but to go forward.

ACTIONABLE NEXT STEPS:

Evaluate Your Plans: Reflect on your goals and identify if having a Plan B is inadvertently limiting your commitment to Plan A.

Find the Courage: Explore the fears and uncertainties holding you back from fully committing to your goals.

Burn Your Boats: Consider areas in your life where burning your boats would be the key to unlocking focus.

TAKEAWAYS:

The Burn the Boats strategy is a potent approach to achieving success.

It involves committing fully to your goals without any fallback options, demanding courage and determination.

LESSON OF THE DAY ⤵️

“Hey, I'm now 16 days into my second attempt at project kaizen. I couldn't keep up with the diet last time, so I wanted a clean start with 2024. But its getting to me again. I feel as though I'm hitting a wall of unmotivation, but I'm not consciously wanting to give up. Is there a way for me to stay motivated, as fighting the lack of motivation is very mentally draining. Thanks :)”

Project Kaizen Isn't it a case of motivation? No one can stay motivated for 100 days straight because the initial excitement wears off within the first week.

The objective of Project Kaizen is not to stay motivated enough to reach the end goal but to be disciplined enough to enjoy the journey.

It's about doing the things that you don’t necessarily want to do because you know that they're going to benefit you down the line. That's why it's a challenge.

If all it took to complete was a spark of motivation, then anyone could finish it.

The reason not everyone does is because it requires you to dig deep and open up different doors within yourself.
