INCREASING YOUR VPH (VALUE PER HOUR)

349 Words | 1 Min 16 Sec Read

Thereā€™s this thing called skill stacking that is said to increase your VPH, also known as your value per hour, which is basically how much an hour of your time is worth. This is something that in the modern day a lot more people are starting to do, and hereā€™s how it works:

It is essentially the art of acquiring skills that complement each other to increase your overall value, and that value is determined by the current market that youā€™re in. Any skill that you can think of has a predetermined value.

For example;

  • Marketing +5

  • Sales +7

  • Artist + 4

Having these skills on their own is great; theyā€™re basically like having a career for the entirety of your life. You have a skill that determines how much youā€™re worth.

Skill stacking is what it says on the tin. You are stacking relevant skills that complement each other on top of each other. Letā€™s say you work in marketing. For example, you could either just learn the basics of marketing and attempt to offer your services however you want or you could also develop the skills of social media SEO and print media, and now you have a skill stack. This means instead of your worth being the skill of marketing, you now have multiple skills to increase your overall value. (See image below for illustration.)

Now, doing this within the industry that you want to work in increases your overall value per hour (VPH), and you can still stack endlessly while being adaptive and looking for the next big thing to add to your knowledge portfolio.

But what are some examples of skill stacks?

Jayz actually mastered skill stacking with his career, and hereā€™s how he did it;

  • He started off knowing how to rhyme.

  • Then learned to rap

  • Then writing lyrics

  • Then producing

  • Then performing

  • Then marketing

  • Then how to start a label

You see, it wasnā€™t that he got good at one thing; he stacked micro-skills on top of each other, which actually compounded his value and made him the billionaire he is today.

ACTIONABLE NEXT STEPS:

Donā€™t stop at one; just because youā€™ve developed one skill, treat it as a foundation for more that you can stack on top. If youā€™ve mastered the skill of sales, now pick an industry that you can use it in.

TAKEAWAYS:

Having one skill is basically a career; thatā€™s why so many go through life at the basic level; they have one skill and one determined value to themselves. To increase this, learn more relevant skills.
