THE 2 KINDS OF FAILURE

There are two types of failure in life.

The first comes from never trying out your ideas because you are afraid to take action, because you’re afraid of what others might think, or because you are waiting for the perfect time.

This type of failure is the type that you will never learn from; it’s the type of failure that will keep you trapped in a cycle of mediocrity and will end up destroying you. It’s the type of failure that a marathon runner experiences when he chooses not to go past the start line.

The second kind of failure comes from a bold and venturesome spirit; it comes as a result of giving it your all.

This is the kind of failure that you want; it's the kind of failure that you can learn from, grow from, and develop. It’s the kind of failure that propels you forward in your understanding and experience.

If you fail in this way, the hit that you take to your reputation is greatly outweighed by what you learn. Repeated failure will toughen your spirit and show you with absolute clarity how things must be done.

The truth is that you’re actually better off failing than having everything go right on your first attempt, because if that does happen, you will never question the element of luck, making you think that you have some kind of golden touch.

Getting it right on your first attempt also sets you the wrong expectations because now you think it should be easy, and when you inevitably do fail, it will confuse and demoralise you past the point of learning.

The champion who succeeded on his 20th try is much more of a champion than the one who succeeded on his first because he knows what failure tastes, smells, and feels like.

ACTIONABLE NEXT STEPS:

Whatever you do, never fail the first way, because that way will haunt you and will act as an obstacle for the rest of your life until you build up the courage to fail the second way.

Try, fail, learn, try, fail, learn, try, fail, learn over and over again because somewhere in between that seeming endless cycle will be a little bit of success, which makes it all worth it.
