HOW TO QUICKLY GET OUT OF A RUT

333 Words | 1 Min 13 Sec Read

Have you ever had it when you're super productive, you’re going to the gym consistently, reading loads of books, getting your work done, and just overall killing it at life, and then all of a sudden, something happens?

Almost like a switch flips, you lose motivation and fall back into bad habits and things that you should be doing are stacking up.

Yeah, well, that's known as a rut, and lucky for you, we are going to teach you how you can quickly get out of one using a few different strategies.

Strategy #1: Utilise the do-something principle.

This is a principle brought to light by Mark Manson, which basically states that if you're stuck on a problem, don't just sit there; start working on it.

Even if you don't know what you're doing, the simple act of working on it will eventually inspire the right ideas to show up in your head.

And the same goes with getting out of a rut—just start doing something, and the momentum of doing that thing will carry you to the next, so on and so forth.

Strategy #2: Reward yourself for small wins.

Now, I'm not saying to reward yourself for a shower, as we both know that you’re capable of much more, but the need to reward yourself for small wins, especially if you’re in a vulnerable position, is a psychological necessity.

This goes back to the primal days, and the parts of your brain that are responsible for motivation are required to have positive reinforcement (a reward) in order to do more of that thing.

Strategy #3: Progressive overload.

Instead of yo-yo’ing between taking crazy amounts of action and then doing nothing, like with exercise, you need to progressively overload the things that you want to get better at.

You’re not going to get out of a rut by reading five books in a day, but you can start with five pages, do six tomorrow, do seven the next day, and so on.

ACTIONABLE NEXT STEPS:

Screenshot this email, star it, and do whatever you have to do to save it so that next time you’re in a rut, you can come back to it and take some actionable strategies to get back out of it.

These strategies aren’t going to be relevant until you’re in a rut, so in order to not get into one in the first place, don’t push the gas pedal too hard because that's one of the leading reasons why people fall into one in the first place: burnout.

LESSON OF THE DAY ⤵️

You will always get respect for working your ass off from the people who matter.

And if they make fun of you working your ass off before it pays off - they don’t matter.

I have to set up a goal to know more about myself and understand what my core values are. How do I find my values and ethics that I believe in rather than the ones I think I do?

If you’re young, this won’t be an easy answer, as the honest truth is that you haven’t explored enough of life to know what you value, and the likelihood is that your values will change over time the more you come to understand.

It can be difficult to really know what is important to you when there is so much information out there telling you what should be important, which means you have two options.

Option 1: Consume a bunch of different view points and decide which one means the most to you.

Option 2: Don’t consume any view points and allow yourself to discover your core values over time.

This will likely take some soul-searching to discover; therefore, it's best not to rush the process.
