The Power Of Boredom

We naturally avoid boredom at all costs because the thought of doing something is better than the thought of doing nothing at all. People used to have to be creative to fight boredom, but now it’s almost too easy. To escape it, all we need to do is pick up a supercomputer in our pockets, and we can access anything.

THE POWER OF BOREDOM

320 Words | 1 Min 12 Sec Read

We naturally avoid boredom at all costs because the thought of doing something is better than the thought of doing nothing at all.

People used to have to be creative to fight boredom, but now it’s almost too easy.

To escape it, all we need to do is pick up a supercomputer in our pockets, and we can access anything.

But… there are some hidden benefits to being bored that you’re missing out on.

Being bored makes you have to think.

It sounds stupidly obvious, but being bored makes you think. If you have nothing to do, then you're just left with your thoughts, and you can either ignore them or embrace them.

Actually, thinking is something that many people don’t do, think about your current life situation, whether you are where you want to be, what you’re grateful for and proud of, and what you think you need to improve on.

Ideas come from boredom, not a lack of it.

‘Boredom leads to creativity’ is a common phrase, and it couldn't be more true. A good example of this is the creation of Harry Potter.

It was on a four-hour train journey from Manchester to London, with nothing to do but stare out of the window, that J.K. Rowling came up with the idea of 'the boy who lived'.

You should be doing the same thing over and over again; therefore, be slightly bored. It's a metric for determination.

In the pursuit of our goals, there will undoubtedly be boring moments and boring tasks to complete, and whether you make it through these moments is a good indicator of whether you’re built for them.

If all you want is sunshine and rainbows, then boredom will whittle out those who want it from those who really want it.

ACTIONABLE NEXT STEPS:

Embrace the lack of choice because being bored means you give yourself no other choice.

Being bored gives you no other choice.

If you have no distractions, no alternative things to do, and you’re forced to do the thing in front of you, well, you will do it because you have no other choice.

So next time you find yourself bored out of your mind, go a bit mental, and instead of picking up your phone, stare at the wall for 5 minutes until you’re forced to do something else or you have a spark of creativity!

TAKEAWAYS:

3 Benefits to being bored:

LESSON OF THE DAY ⤵️

2 questions to a better life:

Who planted these goals in my head?

Am I sure I want to be pursuing them?

“How do you deal with parents objection towards entrepreneurship?”

Ask yourself: Are your parents living the life that you want to live? It's a harsh one to have to face, but due to simple human nature, your parents want you to follow the path that they have traveled; they want to teach you what they know from their own experience.

If their experience isn’t vast enough to encapsulate different paths in life, then their advice will tend to be extremely narrow.

Your parents typically want two things:

  • To know that you will be able to support yourself.

  • To know that you have a plan.

The best way to get them onboard with your path is to provide them with a plan for how you plan to execute it.
