🌳 The Physics of Productivity

In many ways, procrastination is a fundamental law of the universe. It's Newton's first law applied to productivity. Objects at rest tend to stay at rest. The good news? It works the other way too. Objects in motion tend to stay in motion. When it comes to being productive, this means one thing: the most important thing is to find a way to get started. Once you get started, it is much easier to stay in motion.

QUOTE OF THE DAY

“If you don't program your mind for success, it will be programmed for mediocrity.”

HOW TO GET SH*T DONE ACCORDING TO ISSAC NEWTON

In many ways, procrastination is a fundamental law of the universe. It's Newton's first law applied to productivity. Objects at rest tend to stay at rest.

The good news? It works the other way too. Objects in motion tend to stay in motion. When it comes to being productive, this means one thing: the most important thing is to find a way to get started. Once you get started, it is much easier to stay in motion.

So, what's the best way to get started when you are stuck procrastinating?

This handy little tick called the 2-Minute rule

Notice that you don't have to finish your task. In fact, you don't even have to work on the primary task. However, thanks to Newton's first law, you'll often find that once you start this little 2-minute task, it is much easier to keep moving.

For example:

Right now you may not feel like going to the gym. However, if you create a workout plan for the day, go fill up your bottle and take your pre-workout you may find that it’s just enough to get you out the door.

Or if you may be wanting to start that new side hustle you’ve been pushing back. If you put your phone into another room, get up the necessary resources you need and eliminate distractions, however, you’ll find it much easier to keep that momentum going.

Motivation often comes after starting. Find a way to start small. Objects in motion tend to stay in motion.

You can also use his other two laws to your advantage:

  1. It's not just about working hard, it's also about working on the right things. You have a limited amount of force and where you apply it matters.

  2. Your productivity is a balance of opposing forces. If you want to be more productive, you can either power through the barriers or remove the opposing forces. The second option seems to be less stressful.

Who would have known Issac Newton is a productivity genius?!

ACTIONABLE NEXT STEPS:

Try these out for yourself, If you ever feel that burden of not being able to start, try to start small. If you want to read 20 pages of a book start by reading 2 and build your way up from there.

TAKEAWAYS:

Newton's laws of motion reveal insights that tell you pretty much everything you need to know about how to be productive.

  1. Objects in motion tend to stay in motion. Find a way to get started in less than 2 minutes.

  2. It's not just about working hard, it's also about working on the right things. You have a limited amount of force and where you apply it matters.

  3. Your productivity is a balance of opposing forces. If you want to be more productive, you can either power through the barriers or remove the opposing forces. The second option seems to be less stressful.
