QUOTE OF THE DAY

“You have the power over your mind, not outside events. Realise this and you will find strength.”

Marcus Aurelius

In simple terms, so many struggle and stress over events they can not control such as the news or political changes whereas all you can control is your own mind. If that’s all you focus on then not only will you find inner peace but inner strength.

YOU NEED THE MIND OF A STOIC

Stocisim is practised by some of the most successful and incredible people yet they are extremely quiet about it because part of stoicism is having control within and not preaching it. It was birthed many thousand years ago by a group of wise men from Rome who wanted to fi

gure out what lead to lasting happiness or eudaimonia. They came up with a pretty fantastic system for achieving this through logic and introspection. They focused heavily on understanding the human mind. You can think of it as an operating system for your mind such as Windows or Apple that allows you to see the world clearly and live a great life.

There are a few key principles of stoicism to live by such as ‘your mind creates your reality, so control your mind’. Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius wrote: “If any external thing causes you to distress, it is not the thing itself that troubles you, but your own judgement about it. And this you have the power to eliminate now.”

In a weird way, stoicism is about having a durable mindset. One in which nothing can penetrate it and affect your mood or how you proceed. A fantastic example of a stoic (or someone who lives by the principles) Is Keanu Reeves. A man with true moral excellence. He has given away much of his money to an unnamed Leukemia Foundation and to the cast of movies he has appeared in. He is one of the most successful Hollywood Actors yet he travels in subways.

According to stoicism, a true sign of a successful person is if he is truly okay without the things he typically desires or depends on for comfort. For no wealth, abundance, power has any value to a happy life if the person who occupies them has not yet learned to live properly without them. Stoicism was adopted by George Washington, Nelson Mandela and now by modern authors like Tim Ferriss and Ryan Holiday.

Another example of someone that has stoic features is Ferb from Phineas and Ferb (If you know, you know).

ACTIONABLE NEXT STEPS:

Consider exploring stoicism in your own life. Read a book or watch some videos and just educate yourself on the possibilities and methods.

TAKEAWAYS:

The end goal with Stoicism and philosophy is to become a better person and if you’re doing it for any other reason, you’re just wasting your time.
