YOU NEED TO READ ‘THE 80/20 PRINCIPLE’

The 80/20 Principle states that 80% of what you want comes from 20% of what you do.

The 80/20 principle is most evident in business: if you build five products, one product will generate more profit than the other four products combined. For example, the Apple iPhone generates more profit than MacBooks, iPads, watches, and AirPods combined.

But few people realise how prevalent the 80/20 principle is in their personal lives.

Your free time—the time you spend with one really close friend—is more emotionally rewarding than quadrupling the time spent with one really good friend.

Listening to one really good podcast or watching one really good YouTube video provides more enjoyment and insight than four other podcast videos of the same length.

When you understand the 80/20 principle, you’ll realise that only about 1/5th of your time is likely to give you 4/5th’s of your achievements, results, or happiness.

So, how can you use the 80/20 principle in your life?

First, identify your 20%.

When you do a 20% activity, you always get more energy out of it than you put into it. Think of the things that you do that yield the most rewards, or the people that you’ve learned the most from, or the people you enjoy talking to the most.

Whenever you’re about to do something, ask yourself if the thing that you’re doing is part of the 20%, because if not, then you’re just letting the majority of your time go to waste.

Secondly, try to double the time spent doing your 20%.

If you spend double the time doing 20% of things, then you will yield a 160% increase in output.

ACTIONABLE NEXT STEPS:

Try it yourself within everything that you do.

What are the 20% of books that you’ve read that you learn the most from?

What are the 20% of friends that you enjoy being with the most?

What are the 20% of actions you need to take to give you 80% of the output?

LESSON OF THE DAY ⤵️

“How to know if your goals, passions, and the way you spend your time is truly meaningful?”

- Anonymous

You have to find a balance between enjoyment, fulfilment, and something that helps others. If you can find a balance between those three things, then you can rest assured that the thing you’re doing is meaningful.
