How To Make Your Work Enjoyable

Ali Abdaal is the guy that most people know as the productivity/self-improvement YouTuber with over 5.1 million subscribers (and counting), but he recently released a book ‘Feel Good Productivity’ that outlines how to get sh*t done whilst loving every second of it, turning work into enjoyment.

QUOTE OF THE DAY

“You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You are able to say to yourself, 'I lived through this horror. I can take the next thing that comes along.'“

Eleanor Roosevelt

FEEL GOOD PRODUCTIVITY

Ali Abdaal is the guy that most people know as the productivity/self-improvement YouTuber with over 5.1 million subscribers (and counting), but he recently released a book ‘Feel Good Productivity’ that outlines how to get sh*t done whilst loving every second of it, turning work into enjoyment.

He goes over three of his 'feel-good conditions’ that allow this premise to be true and will make doing the work more enjoyable by releasing the feel-good hormones: Dopamine, oxytocin, and serotonin fuel a highly productive, feel-good state.

Here are those three conditions:

Curiosity.

Ali says that turning on the curiosity switch (such as giving yourself a side quest) can make your work 10x more enjoyable.

This can be as simple as building and playing the perfect music playlist, working at a random coffee shop in new locations every day, or setting yourself 20 minute timers to see how much work you could get done and constantly trying to 1-up yourself.

When you schedule side quests throughout the work day, you eagerly anticipate the next side quest and stay curious, which filters into your work.

Connection.

When writing his book, Ali frequently rented a co-working space in order to write with other people.

He didn’t talk to people, but he said that just the presence of them there helped boost his creativity, as knowing that others are working on a similar thing to you helps you to work harder.

You can do this yourself with a group of friends or in a coffee shop—anywhere that makes you feel surrounded by others on a similar mission.

Confidence.

You will put off work and procrastinate if your work creates fear and uncertainty, which is fear that you can’t meet expectations and uncertainty about what steps to take next.

The way to move past this is to mimic the confidence of a highly skilled person.

So in simple terms, if you want to have a productive work session, watch some Ali Abdaal and pretend that you are him when getting sh*t done.

ACTIONABLE NEXT STEPS:

To take advantage of the curiosity switch, ask yourself before every working day, ‘Whats today's side quest?’ It can be something stupid and simple, but as long as it gives you an alternative task to do, then that's all you need.

To take advantage of the connection switch, join groups like Focusmate, Flow Club, or Cave Day, where you’ll find other people working on a similar mission to yourself.

To take advantage of the confidence switch, find a group of people that you look up to who have walked the path before you, and before you dive into a work session, watch some of their content and get inspired!
