A teacher asked Warren Buffett, one of the wealthiest men on the planet how to advise students on preparing for retirement.

Buffett said the students should treat their minds and bodies like “the only car you’re going to have for the rest of your life.” This is what he said:

“When I was 16, I had just two things on my mind - girls and cars. I wasn't very good with girls. So I thought about cars. I thought about girls, too, but I had more luck with cars.

Let's say that when I turned 16, a genie had appeared to me, and that genie said, 'I'm going to give you the car of your choice. It'll be here tomorrow morning with a big bow tied on it. Brand-new. And it's all yours!'

Having heard all the genie stories, I would say, 'What's the catch? And the genie would answer, "There's only one catch ... This is the last car you're ever going to get in your life. So it's got to last a lifetime?'

If that had happened, I would have picked out a car, but, can you imagine, knowing it had to last a lifetime, what I would do with it? I would read the manual about five times.

I would always keep it garaged. If there was the least little dent or scratch, I'd have it fixed right away because I wouldn't want it rusting. I would baby that car, because it would have to last a lifetime.

This is exactly the position you are in concerning your mind and body. You only get one mind, and you only get one body and it's got to last a lifetime.

Now, it's very easy to let them ride for many years. But if you don't take care of that mind and that body, they'll be a wreck 40 years later, just like the car would be. It's what you do right now, today, that determines how your mind and body will operate 10, 20, and 30 years from now. You must take care of it.”

Your mind and body are your first foundation, and they shouldn’t be up for negotiation with whether you choose to take care of them or not.

It should be a non-negotiable part of your daily routine to improve what will stick with you throughout your entire life.

This doesn’t mean you have to become an Olympic athlete and a scientist; it just means you need to keep it in check, keep testing your mind and body, and every now and then push it to its limits because from there is where you will grow.

ACTIONABLE NEXT STEPS:

Make it a re-occurrence.

Three to four times a week, go and work out, whether it's a walk or a weight session, depending on your goals, and work on your mind.

DAILY, Whether you read 10 pages of a book or consume some inspirational thoughts through YouTube videos, the idea is to test what you know and find out more about what you don’t know.

LESSON OF THE DAY ⤵️

“Why do humans so often dictate their actions purely based on their emotions, when emotions are extremely volatile and we know there are things that must be done anyway.”

Anonymous

Emotions are what make you who you are. Emotions make us want, feel, desire and more often then not are the driving force behind what it is that you’re working towards.

You don’t want money to have money but you want money to have the freedom to buy what you want when you want to ultimately feel happy.

On the other hand, emotions can act as an anchor which means that you need to learn how to control them and when it comes to doing things that you know you need to do regardless of how you feel, you need to eliminate them.
