Issac Newtons Productivity Hacks

Have you heard of Isaac Newton’s first law? Objects at rest tend to stay at rest. The same applies the other way round, objects in motion tend to stay in motion and the same law applies to productivity. When it comes to being productive, this means two things: Once you’re being productive, it’s easy to stay productive & the most important thing is to find a way to get started.

Once you get started, it is much easier to stay in motion.

So, what's the best way to get started when you are stuck procrastinating?

Using a handy little trick called the 2-Minute Rule.

The 2-minute rule is just the practice of doing the thing that you don't want to do for 2 minutes. You don’t want to read? Do it for 2 minutes and once you get through a page you will find it easy to continue reading.

Notice that you don't have to finish your task. In fact, you don't even have to work on the primary task, you'll often find that once you start this little 2-minute task, it is much easier to keep moving.

For example:

Right now, you may not feel like going to the gym. However, if you create a workout plan for the day, go fill up your bottle, and take your pre-workout, you may find that it’s just enough to get you out the door.

Or if you may want to start that new side hustle you’ve been thinking about. If you put your phone in another room, get up the necessary resources you need and set yourself a timer, you’ve already made a start.

Motivation often comes after starting, so find a way to start small and remember that objects in motion tend to stay in motion.

You can also use his other two laws to your advantage:

  1. It's not just about working hard; it's also about working on the right things. You have a limited amount of force, and where you apply it matters.

  2. Your productivity is a balance of opposing forces. If you want to be more productive, you can either power through the barriers or remove the opposing forces.

TAKEAWAYS:

Newton's laws of motion reveal insights that tell you pretty much everything you need to know about how to be productive.

  1. Objects in motion tend to stay in motion. Find a way to get started in less than 2 minutes.

  2. It's not just about working hard; it's also about working on the right things. You have a limited amount of force, and where you apply it matters.

  3. Your productivity is a balance of opposing forces. If you want to be more productive, you can either power through the barriers or remove the opposing forces. The second option seems to be less stressful.

Who would have known Isaac Newton was a productivity genius?!
