Think about it: Your social skills drive much of your life.

Better social skills produce better relationships, which will make you happier. But you’ll also progress in your career faster and be better at negotiating, resolving conflict, collaborating, parenting, and so on.

Humans are social creatures, and our social skills are at the forefront of how we are perceived by other people. If you lack social skills, people will see you as awkward, unfriendly, and closed-off, which is not a reputation that you want to build up.

As someone who wants to live the best life they possibly can, you need to make sure that your social skills are sharpened to a tee, so follow these few tricks to help you do that.

  1. Active listening

What do people love more than anything else? Themselves, and if that's the case, what do people want to do the most? Talk about themselves.

If you know how to listen to those people actively, aka nodding, maintaining eye contact, responding appropriately, etc, then you will be perceived as caring, engaging, and thoughtful, and you don’t even have to do anything!

Listening is a powerful skill you can improve on that will completely change how you are seen by other people.

  1. Learn body language.

If you want to improve your social skills, learning body language is a quick one-way trip to doing so. We are visual people that can identify micro-body movements like crossed arms, hunched forward shoulders, and titled down heads, and we respond to that.

Learning to improve your body language and make yourself more open and inviting will do you worlds of good when it comes to improving your social skills.

This also moves into the skill of mirroring, a technique of subtly reflecting the body language and speaking tone and pacing of whoever it is that you’re talking to—not so much to the point where you’re trying to be someone that you’re not, but so that you instantly become more likeable.

If the person that you’re talking to speaks really slowly with a very open body gesture, subtly do the same because if you start speaking extremely fast with a closed body language, it can seem unsettling.

  1. Charisma

You’re better off being any body than no body; if you blend into the crowd, you will stay that way forever, yet if you want to stand out and make yourself known, you need to be charismatic, as people will remember you.

No one remembers the shy person who stood in the corner of the room, but they do remember the person with personality.

Don’t blend into the background.
