THE IMPORTANCE OF MOVING PIECES

The reason you’ll struggle to make a lot of progress in a short period of time is due to one simple factor: your focus.

You may see people boast about how long or hard they work, yet 14-hour days don’t mean anything if you’re not making real, tangible progress.

But how is it even possible to work 14-hour days and still make no progress? By working on the completely wrong things that don’t contribute to your overall growth.

In truth, working 14-hour days is a smokescreen to the fact that you don’t have your priorities set in order because if you really knew what you were working on and why you were working on it, you would be able to get far more done in less time.

Because remember, it's not about working hard; it's about working smart.

Moving Pieces

Thats where this term called moving pieces comes in.

Your moving pieces are the things that you can work on and change that actually contribute towards your end goal and are the only things that contribute towards your end goal.

Let's look at it from a business sense.

If your goal is to make money, the only moving pieces you should be focussing on are:

  • Working on your product

  • Finding people who need your product

  • Selling your product

Anything and everything else is just a smokescreen that makes you feel like you’re working hard but actually isn’t contributing towards your end goal.

If your goal is to make money and everything in your to-do list doesn’t contribute towards one of those 3 moving pieces, then you’re not going to make as much progress as you would like—thats the fact.

So… How can you create your own moving pieces?

Firstly, you need to get crystal clear on what exactly your end goal is, and for this example, pick one end goal (let's say it's to get in good shape).

Now you have to break down your goal into the variables that you can control that will contribute towards them.

In this example:

  • The things you eat

  • The amount that you move

Now its about refining what you’re working on—if your one and only goal is to get in good shape and everything that you’re doing doesn’t somehow contribute towards either of those two moving pieces, then you’re focussing on the wrong things and therefore are not going to make as much progress as you would like.

ACTIONABLE NEXT STEPS:

Try it yourself:

  • Identify your end goal

  • Break your end goal down into moving pieces

  • Refine your daily tasks to only contribute towards your end goal

  • Watch and be amazed at how much progress you make

TAKEAWAYS:

You don’t only have to have one goal but the fewer you focus on, the more aligned your focus is and therefore the more progress you will make over a shorter period of time.

LESSON OF THE DAY ⤵️

As a teenager, I want to start thinking to future and create goals. I already know what I’m passionate about, but is there a way in which as a teenager, which means I have no actual money, that I can start working towards those goals? Or a way in which I can become a better person and step out of my comfort zone?

The harsh truth is that in order to grow your knowledge and experience you have to spend one of two things:

  • Time

  • Or Money

The difference between the two is that one of them you can spend and make back yet the other you can’t.

Lucky for you, when you’re young, you have all the time in the world to spend and you need to utilise that factor - Exchange your time for knowledge and don’t stop exchanging your time for knowledge until you’ve made enough money that you can now exchange your money for knowledge instead.

There is also no secret to stepping outside of your comfort zone, the simple answer is… Do it.
