🌳 How To Get What You Want By Letting Go

According to the Backwards Law, the pursuit of happiness, success, or any desired outcome can actually push it further away. This happens because the more desperate and attached we become to achieving something, the more it eludes us.

QUOTE OF THE DAY

The whole problem with the world is that the fools and fanatics are always so certain of themselves and wiser people are so full of doubts.

Bertrand Russell

THE BACKWARDS LAW

According to the Backwards Law, the pursuit of happiness, success, or any desired outcome can actually push it further away. This happens because the more desperate and attached we become to achieving something, the more it eludes us.

A good example of this is with Navy Seals. Part of their basic training is an underwater exercise one of the things that they have to do is they have to swim to the bottom of a pool, and they have to tie these knots underwater, and then they have to swim back up to the surface. And they do this over and over again. What happens is, a lot of times, the guys will get to the bottom, they'll tie the knots, and they'll swim up to the surface, and they'll be gasping for air. They'll be completely out of breath. And they'll look at their instructor, and their instructor will say, 'You didn't have enough air, go back down, and do it again.'

But what the instructor tells them is, 'Listen, the more desperate you are for air, the more the pool will fight you.' And what he means by that is, the more you're attached to that outcome, the more you're attached to getting air, the more you're attached to surviving, the more your body tenses up, the more you panic, and the less likely you are to actually make it to the surface.

Diminishing return curve

You have to be aware of the diminishing return curve which is the idea that the more you try to achieve something the less rewarding and effective it becomes. Productivity is a great example, Working for 1-4 hours you’ll see a great increase in your work output however anything above that and it becomes much less effective

ACTIONABLE NEXT STEPS:

Allow your mind to stop chasing its own tail and allow it to achieve its desires by giving up its desires. Let go of things that are beyond your control.

TAKEAWAYS:

Accept that most of the things that you do in life will result in failure. This is okay because it’s the only thing that will allow you to get to the surface and do it again.
