Get Your Priorities Straight

Your actions are what dictate what you choose to do throughout your day, and enough of those turn into a week, then a month, and so on and so forth into a year, but if you go back to the beginning, what dictates your actions are your priorities, and aside from popular belief, your priorities aren't something that you necessarily make a conscious choice of but something that's instinctive.

If your house was burning down and you could only save one thing, what would that thing be? Whatever you choose is your priority. You didn't have time to weigh out the pros and cons; you just had to make a choice. But priorities don’t just come into play when your house is burning down; they come into play every day.

How you choose to spend your time is based on what you prioritise; what you choose to do when you first wake up is whatever you prioritise; therefore, if you want to change your daily actions, you need to change your priorities.

Your priorities aren't something you can just change when you feel like it; typically, they will change when you are either forced to or there has been some kind of event that has shocked you into changing them.

If you’re a naturally unhealthy eater, you’re not going to start eating healthy just because someone tells you to, but when you have a heart attack and just survive, your priorities for what food you eat will change.

Here are a few things that you should prioritise if you want to achieve greatness in your lifetime.

Your health

Without a doubt, your health should be your number one priority. It's the thing that allows you to get out of bed every day, enjoy the simple things in life, and live a full life.

Your future self

Your future self should be a priority in everything that you do. Whenever you make a decision, you should stop and ask yourself, ‘How is this going to impact my future?" Because that future you inevitably becomes the current you.

Your long-term vision

Similar to your future self but more in the sense of what you want to achieve, everything you do should align with what you want long-term, and if it doesn’t, it should be ignored.

ACTIONABLE NEXT STEPS:

Start working on what your priorities are; if you’re struggling to change them, you may need a wakeup call, so look into how your current priorities are negatively impacting you and then make a start on changing them.
