What is an unfair advantage?

An "unfair advantage" is the skill you have that is your unique talent. Were someone investing in you or in your idea, your unfair advantage might be why you'd win the investment over the competition. On a team, your unfair advantage might be the reason you're assigned a leadership role for a task. For clients, your unfair advantage could represent why you are the best person for the job at hand.

But your “unfair advantage” can also be much more simple than that. You have an unfair advantage in life over those that live in 3rd world countries simply because you were born in a 1st world country (assuming you do)! Your unfair advantage could also be that because you were born in a 3rd world country and had to graft your way into education, you have developed crucial determination skills that can be used throughout life.

How do we find them?

You can’t use your unfair advantage to your advantage if you don’t know what it is but once you can dial in on the skill set that sets you apart, start to use it to your own advantage. You have to really think about what sets you apart, a good way to do this is to imagine that someone is penalising you - they are ripping you apart and making fun of everything about you. You may rarely toot your own horn but if you were forced to back yourself up, what would you say?

The intent in helping you to nail your unfair advantage is to improve your self-awareness. It's important that you know what you offer others and what you bring to the table.

How do we use them?

You have to use your unfair advantage wherever you can because everyone has one but very few know how to utilise it. You can use it when trying to get your first job or to sign your first client. The better you can ‘milk it’ the more effective it will be.
