DON’T START A BUSINESS, START A SKILL

240 Words | 1 Min Read

Whether you want to believe it or not, every business you will ever come across is just a selection of skills stacked together that make the business what it is.

For example, SMMA (social media marketing) isn’t a skill; it's copywriting, sales, project management, people management, digital marketing, and many more skills merged together to make it what it is, which is why it's foolish to 'start a business’ but instead start with skills.

The advice of 'start this business model’ is so ineffective, and the majority of people will fail after a matter of months because they are required to learn a collection of brand new skills that have to perfectly align with each other. This isn’t to say it's impossible, but to increase your overall chances of success, it’s best to start with something you know and evolve from there.

So, what do you do instead?

Start with what you know. Any skill that you have can be developed into a business. For example, if your skill is illustration, you have two steps:

  1. Work on improving that skill. Become the best possible person you can at that skill, and use every resource you have to refine it.

  2. Now work on developing skills that complement that skill and increase the value of the core skill.

By illustrating, you could then learn the skill of sales in order to increase the value of your original skill and make money from it.

ACTIONABLE NEXT STEPS:

Start with a skill that you have and work on becoming the best at that skill, then look for other skills that compliment the original skill to increase its overall value

TAKEAWAYS:

‘Start this very specific business’ is the wrong advice; it's the advice that benefits the person telling you to start it. Start with a skill that you can develop into a business because then you will see success.
