THE CONTRARIAN EFFECT

314 Words | 1 Min 8 Sec Read

If you want to get ahead of 99% of people, then you need to get ready to do something that 99% aren't willing to do.

It’s painfully obvious, right? Just like how your nose is right in front of your face and so your brain doesn’t even register it, facts like this become easily ignored because they're, well, obvious.

To get ahead, however, you need to have a contrarian idea.

Most people float through life, following the current. Yet, a minority dares to think independently, proposing ideas that defy the norm.

A contrarian idea is an idea that's unique and different from the masses. It’s an idea that originally seems stupid but ends up changing the world.

Steve Jobs, for example, had a contrarian idea; he foresaw a world dominated by computers a decade before others.

Jeff Bezos had a contrarian idea; he believed that the internet would create the biggest commerce platform in the world at a time when people thought that the internet was a phase and a sham.

It takes balls to have a contrarian idea that you actually stand by despite the noise. Let us re-iterate: it's easy to have a contrarian idea but hard to stand by it.

But having a contrarian idea is just the beginning; we all have ideas; being correct about them is the real challenge.

You then need to disagree with the majority and have the courage and perseverance to push through with your idea.

And then, of course, taking action is the only way to make that idea come to life.

ACTIONABLE NEXT STEPS:

We all have ideas. Ideas are nothing special.

Pair them with real-life action, however, and that's when the magic happens.

Embrace your contrarian ideas; they may seem stupid, outlandish, and idiotic, but... If you truly believe in it, the best thing you can do is try, fail, and try again.

Less is more in self development

Constraints in our lives often force us to make choices and cultivate talents that would otherwise go undeveloped.

Constraints drive creativity and foster skill development.
