Bring On Boredom

We naturally avoid boredom at all costs because the thought of doing something is better than the thought of doing nothing at all. People used to have to be creative to fight boredom, but now it’s almost too easy. To escape it, all we need to do is pick up a supercomputer in our pockets, and we can access anything.

QUOTE OF THE DAY

THE ADVANTAGE OF BOREDOM

We naturally avoid boredom at all costs because the thought of doing something is better than the thought of doing nothing at all. People used to have to be creative to fight boredom, but now it’s almost too easy. To escape it, all we need to do is pick up a supercomputer in our pockets, and we can access anything.

But there are countless different benefits to being bored that are ignored, and that’s what we are going to cover: the power of boredom.

Being bored makes you have to think.

It sounds stupidly obvious, but being bored makes you think. If you have nothing to do, then you're just left with your thoughts, and you can either ignore them or embrace them. Actually, thinking is something that many people don’t do. Think about your current life situation, whether you are where you want to be, what you’re grateful for and proud of, and what you think you need to improve on.

These questions that seem easy to answer are so rarely asked, therefore they never end up getting answered. Furthermore, having nothing else to do but think helps you come up with ideas.

Ideas come from boredom, not a lack of it.

‘Boredom leads to creativity’ is a common phrase, and it couldn't be more true. A good example of this is the creation of Harry Potter. It was on a four-hour train journey from Manchester to London, with nothing to do but stare out of the window, that J.K. Rowling came up with the idea of 'the boy who lived'.

“When distraction shifts into boredom, that’s the seed of something creative.”

Being bored while working towards a goal is a fantastic metric of how determined you are to achieve your goals. In the pursuit of our goals, there will undoubtedly be boring moments and boring tasks to complete, and whether you make it through these moments is a good indicator of whether you’re built for them. If all you want is sunshine and rainbows, then boredom will whittle out those who want it from those who really want it.

Being bored means you give yourself no other choice.

Finally, probably the best one, being bored gives you no other choice. If you have no distractions, no alternative thing to do, and you’re forced to do the thing in front of you, well, you will do it as you have no other choice.
